The Fault
Heat is a cooling and airflow problem until proven otherwise
A generator that overheats will shut down on a high-temperature alarm, lose power as it derates, or — if a protection switch has been bypassed — keep running while coolant boils. None of those should be ignored. Heat is what warps heads, damages gaskets and cooks wiring in the canopy.
Most overheating we see on Gauteng standby sets is ordinary cooling failure: low coolant, a blocked radiator, a collapsed hose, a failed water pump or a thermostat that never opens. Dust from construction sites, grass cuttings packed into a rear-yard canopy, and scale in old coolant all reduce heat rejection before the owner notices the temperature gauge.
Load matters as well. A set that is fine on a light test run can overheat when the whole house or a commercial floor actually transfers. Undersized units, blocked ventilation and generators installed against a wall with no discharge path will run hot only when it counts. That is an installation and airflow problem, not always a new radiator.

High-temperature shutdown
The controller logs overheat and stops the engine. Treat the alarm as real until the cooling system and sender are both proven.

Steam or coolant on the ground
A leaking hose, radiator, pump seal or head gasket. Running without coolant after this will damage the engine quickly.

Fine at idle, hot under load
Airflow, radiator blockage or an undersized set showing up only when the transfer switch puts real demand on the engine.

Smell of coolant, no visible leak
Internal leaks, a failed oil cooler on larger diesels, or vapour from a cap that is no longer holding pressure.
Typical Causes
What actually makes a generator run hot
Low or old coolant
Level, mixture and contamination. Water-only fill-ups corrode passages and boil at a lower temperature.
Blocked radiator
Insects, lint and building dust pack the core. The fan can be spinning while almost no air moves through.
Water pump and thermostat
A pump that is not circulating, or a thermostat stuck closed, will overheat with a “full” radiator.
Fan belt and viscous coupling
A glazed belt or failed coupling means the fan is not doing the work the temperature gauge implies.
Canopy airflow
Sets installed tight to a wall, with blocked louvres or recirculating hot discharge air, run hot even with a clean radiator.
Overload
More load than the set was sized for, or a unit that has lost output and is being pushed to make up the difference.

Read the alarm, check the level
We confirm whether protection is genuine and whether the system still has coolant before any loaded run.

Inspect the cooling circuit
Hoses, radiator, cap, pump weep hole, belts and fan operation are checked with the canopy open.

Look at airflow and load
Installation, louvres and typical load are reviewed. A clean radiator will still overheat in a sealed corner.

After the repair we run the set loaded long enough to show temperature is stable, not just started.
Prevention
Servicing is how most overheats are avoided
Overheating is often prevented by ordinary servicing: coolant condition, belts, and a radiator that is actually clean — not just wiped on the outside. Maintenance plans catch slow coolant loss and blocked cores before a shutdown during loadshedding.
If the engine has already boiled dry, diagnosis is more than a hose. We look for secondary damage before quoting a simple “top up and go”.

Common Questions
Generator overheating — practical questions
Can overheating damage a generator?
Yes. Continued running after a high-temperature shutdown can damage gaskets, heads and wiring. Stop the set, allow it to cool, and have the cooling system inspected rather than resetting the alarm and carrying on.
Why does it only overheat during loadshedding?
Test runs are often lightly loaded and short. A real outage puts the designed load on the engine for longer, and a partially blocked radiator or tight canopy only shows then.
Is a high-temperature alarm always the coolant?
Usually the cooling system or airflow. Sometimes a temperature sender or wiring fault creates a false shutdown. We prove coolant flow and sender readings so a working engine is not condemned on a bad switch.
Should I just add water?
Topping up to finish an outage is not a repair. If it is losing coolant there is a leak. Water-only top-ups also change the mixture and encourage corrosion. Have the leak found.
